The GEF in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has been an active participant and beneficiary of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) funds since 1994. The country has implemented programmes and projects to address across various challenges in the GEF focal areas including biodiversity, climate change, land degradation, chemicals and waste management, and international waters. These programmes and projects have contributed significantly to sustainable development, environmental protection, and community empowerment.

However, despite this progress, there is limited information and knowledge and the GEFs work in Zimbabwe. There has been no centralized, publicly accessible platform that documents, showcases, and communicates Zimbabwe’s GEF portfolio of projects. The absence of such a platform limits visibility, knowledge sharing, and stakeholder engagement. To address this gap, the Ministry of Environment, Climate and Wildlife, with support from the GEF Secretariat and the Tropical Biology Association has established this dedicated website to provide information and knowledge about the GEF portfolio in Zimbabwe. The website also serves as a comprehensive repository of Zimbabwe’s GEF projects.
